Hainan Airlines baggage requirements:What are the carry-on baggage size and weight limits for Hainan Airlines?

Q: What are the carry-on baggage size and weight limits for Hainan Airlines?

A: Hainan Airlines allows each economy class passenger one carry-on bag weighing up to 10 kg (22 lbs) with dimensions not exceeding 20 x 40 x 55 cm (8 x 16 x 22 in). Business and first class passengers may bring two carry-on bags, each up to 10 kg, with the same size limits. In addition, passengers may bring a personal item such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack that fits under the seat. All carry-on items must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. Excess or oversized carry-on items must be checked at the gate, potentially incurring fees.

Q: What is the checked baggage allowance for Hainan Airlines economy class?

A: Hainan Airlines economy class checked baggage allowance varies by route and fare type. For most domestic flights within China, the allowance is 20 kg (44 lbs) for adult and child passengers, and 10 kg for infant tickets without a seat. On international routes, the allowance is typically one piece up to 23 kg (50 lbs) for standard economy, while some discounted fares may have no free checked baggage. Premium economy and flexible fares often include two pieces. Passengers should verify their specific allowance on their ticket or by contacting Hainan Airlines, as excess baggage fees apply per kilogram or per piece.

Q: Are there special baggage rules for infants and children on Hainan Airlines?

A: Yes. Infants under 2 years old traveling on an adult's lap are usually allowed one checked bag up to 10 kg (22 lbs) and one collapsible stroller or infant car seat, which can be checked at the gate. Children aged 2 and above receive the same checked baggage allowance as adults. Carry-on items for infants, such as diaper bags and baby food, are permitted in addition to the standard carry-on allowance. However, these items must be within reasonable limits for the flight. It is advisable to confirm specific infant baggage policies when booking, as they may vary by route.

Q: What are the excess baggage fees for Hainan Airlines?

A: Hainan Airlines excess baggage fees depend on the route, weight, and number of extra pieces. For domestic China flights, fees are typically calculated per kilogram, ranging from approximately 1.5% of the full fare per kg, with a common minimum charge. On international flights, fees are often charged per piece: an extra piece up to 23 kg might cost around 100-200 USD, while overweight pieces (23-32 kg) incur a higher fee. Oversized baggage (exceeding 158 cm total dimensions) also incurs additional charges. Rates can change, so passengers should check the official website or contact customer service for current fees before travel.

Q: What items are prohibited in checked or carry-on baggage on Hainan Airlines?

A: Hainan Airlines prohibits dangerous goods such as explosives, flammable liquids, compressed gases, and radioactive materials in both checked and carry-on baggage. Lithium batteries and power banks must be carried in carry-on only, with capacity limits (usually under 100 Wh, and 100-160 Wh with airline approval). Sharp objects, knives, and tools are banned from carry-on but may be allowed in checked baggage if properly packed. Liquids in carry-on must be in containers of 100 ml or less, placed in a transparent 1-liter bag. For a complete list, refer to Hainan Airlines' official dangerous goods policy or IATA regulations.
